Getting to Lake Lungern
Lungern is located conveniently between two of Central Switzerland’s biggest tourist spots: Lucerne and Interlaken. The train ride takes about an hour from either destination, making Lungern an easy and budget-friendly day trip.
You can expect to pay around £25 per person for a return ticket. When departing from Lucerne, there is also an option to purchase a Passepartout travel card for around £30 per person giving you an unlimited travel for the day within the area. The train from Lucerne towards Interlaken is considered to be one of the most scenic train rides in Switzerland which is another reason to visit Lake Lungern by train. The views along the way are truly spectacular as you pass through alpine peaks, green meadows and crystal-clear lakes.

Things to Do at Lake Lungern
One of the best budget-friendly activities is hiking around the Lake, allowing you to fully soak up the scenery. A full loop around Lake Lungern is about 10 kilometers, taking 2-3 hours on a scenic trail. There’s also a shorter, 5-kilometer version if you get off at Lungern train station and head towards Kaiserstuhl to catch the train back from there. This option still allows you to discover the natural beauty of the lake without using too much of your energy or time.
Inseli Lungern is not to be missed, and is a great place to start your hike. It’s a perfect spot to take a moment and admire the views of the turquoise lake, surrounding peaks, and the Dundelbach Waterfall flowing on the opposite side.
Dundelbach Waterfall is another free attraction in Lungern. It’s a two-stage waterfall that descends towards the Lake. The lower falls are easier to reach, just a 5-10 minute detour from the Lake. The path towards the upper falls is slightly steep but you can still reach them within 20 minutes.
Another highlight is Lungern-Turren Cable Car that will take you 1,500 meters above sea level. It offers panoramic views of Lake Lungern and the surrounding peaks. You can also see Dundelbach Waterfall very clearly. The ride costs around £32 return per person.
Of course Lake Lugern offers several places to take a refreshing swim, perfect after a long hike on a hot day. It would also be a great spot to enjoy kayaking or paddle boarding around the Lake.
When you reach Kaiserstuhl, there is a hotel and restaurant to grab a bite to eat. However, be aware that the prices are pretty high (around £30 per person). If you’re travelling Switzerland on a budget, bringing a picnic is a great option.

Bonus: Stop in Sachseln – Another Hidden Gem
If you’re heading back to Lucerne, consider stopping off in Sachseln on the way. This charming village sits right on Lake Sarnen and it’s nestled in a gorgeous valley. It offers excellent hiking options where you can admire the views of alpine peaks and truly immerse yourself in nature. You can also simply chill by the lake and enjoy a swim if the weather is hot enough.
