Introduction
Mostar is a beautiful city in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s a real hidden gem that’s sure to see tourism grow in the coming years. Mostar things to do include its charming old town, rich culture, and unique landmarks. Mostar is also an excellent, affordable alternative to neighbouring Croatia. If you’re interested in exploring Croatia on a budget, we also have a guide on Split and Trogir!
Bosnia and Herzegovina is shaped by both Ottoman influence and more recent history. Mostar reflects the cultural mix found across Bosnia and Herzegovina. The country has been shaped by centuries of different rulers and the changes that came after the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Today, it’s a place where traditions, architecture, and cultures come together in a unique way.
Mostar is easily reached from Sarajevo – the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina – in around two hours by either train or bus. It’s perfect for a short stay of a few nights, though we chose to spend a full week to really appreciate its charm and relaxed atmosphere.
We recommend visiting either May – June or September – October. You will already have good weather to explore, though it won’t be peak season so you will avoid the crowds!
Mostar Things To Do
Mostar and the surrounding area is filled with exciting and unique things to do! Here are our highlights which you will want to add to your Mostar things to do list.
Old Bridge Mostar (Stari Most)
The main symbol of Mostar is the iconic old bridge. Located in the centre of the old town it can’t be missed. Built in the 16th century, it was sadly destroyed in 1993. The reconstruction of the bridge officially opened in 2004.
It’s great to explore from the bridge itself and from the beautiful Neretva River. The Old Bridge is also famous for people jumping from it, around 24 metres above the river. It’s an old tradition which locals still do today for donations from tourists. It’s now something which is more regulated, and even has official events throughout the year.

Crooked Bridge
Not far from Old Bridge, is the picturesque Crooked Bridge. Built at a similar time to Old Bridge, it feels like a charming mini version. It was also often quieter here, and at times we nearly had it all to ourselves, great for photos! Around Crooked bridge, there are several places to enjoy a relaxed drink, or something to eat.

Kujundžiluk Bazar
The Kujundžiluk Bazar is the heart of the old town. It’s extremely pretty, with narrow cobbled streets and small traditional shops and restaurants. It’s very enjoyable to walk around and explore the Bazar, and there are plenty of local hand crafted souvenirs to purchase.
Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque
Again located in the old town, Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque should be on your Mostar things to do list. Offering a further glimpse of Mostar’s culture and stunning architecture. For a small fee you can enter the mosque and also climb the minaret for a unique experience offering great views.

Museum Of War And Genocide Victims
We’ve touched on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s history. The Museum Of War And Genocide Victims is an importnant place to visit on your trip to learn more about this side of their history. You can see more on their Facebook Page. When in Mostar we could see the impact the war still has, with many bullet holes still visible, and the stories shared by locals.
Kravica Waterfall
Kravica Waterfall is a highlight for our Mostar things to do. It’s very similar to more well known waterfalls in neighbouring Croatia. However at around £10 entrance for foreigners it is much more affordable. It’s a beautiful waterfall, with crystal clear, blue, and emerald water. You can still swim in the waterfall, which was a great experience. The water can be chilly, but it is well worth it!
Kravica Waterfall is located around one hour drive from Mostar. There are plenty of tourist trips and buses going daily from both Bosnia and Herzegovina and even Croatia. A guided tour from Mostar is going to start at around £30 per person. We actually booked a private car and driver for half a day to take us, as it was actually a similar price for the two of us. It allowed us to be flexible, and to get there early to beat the crowds!

Blagaj & Vrelo Bune
Blagaj is a historic village located less than 10 miles from Mostar, and definitely worth visiting!
Located on the River Bune and home to the Vrelo Bune, it’s absolutely stunning. Vrelo Bune is a natural spring flowing from a cave and is a unique sight, especially with the Blagaj Tekija historic monastery sitting on the river front.
Blagaj also has plenty of charming restaurants on the river front with fantastic views to admire while enjoying a spot of lunch. If you head to Mostar bus station it’s easy and affordable to reach Blagaj by public bus or taxi.

Fortica Hill
Fortica Hill is an amazing hiking area, offering beautiful nature, and panoramic views across Mostar. It also offers several activities if you are looking for some adventure, such as the sky walk or zipwire! It’s also a perfect spot to watch the sunrise or sunset.
Mostar Accommodation & Food
There are several hotels in Mostar, however we would recommend checking Airbnb for an apartment when planning your Mostar trip. Outside of the high season, for around £40 per night, you should be able to find a modern apartment located close to the river and old town.
There are plenty of charming restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops located in Mostar, you won’t struggle to find somewhere to eat!
We really recommend trying Krompiruša, a local pie made with filo pastry, potatoes and onions. This was a regular snack we bought from the local bakeries while out and about. Trying some local coffee is another must for our Mostar things to do, especially with the local sweet – rahat lokum – similar to Turkish delight.

Final Thoughts
Mostar is a fairytale city that we loved exploring, and it’s the perfect place to slow down and switch off. Hopefully this guide to the best Mostar things to do has inspired your trip and helped you plan what to see and experience while you’re here. We truly recommend visiting this charming city as soon as you can! We are already excited to return and discover even more on our next trip.
