Budapest is undoubtedly where everyone visits when coming to Hungary, but did you know there’s a beautiful city located only 2.5 hours away filled with rich history, unique attractions and a more chilled atmosphere? We recently spent 24 hours in Debrecen, stopping off there on our way back from Oradea, Romania where we spent a few days. See our Oradea Things to Do Guide.

We were pleasantly surprised how much this underrated destination has to offer. Best things to do in Debrecen include strolling through charming streets lined with cafes and lively entertainment, discovering historical landmarks and relaxing in the city’s many green parks. We have put together a short guide to help you make the most of your visit to Hungary’s second largest city.

How to Get to Debrecen

Debrecen has its own small international airport that offers a handful of convenient routes. We managed to fly directly from London Luton for around £50 return per person. You can check Wizzair for the best prices and times that work for you.

If you’re already in Budapest, there’s a direct and convenient train route. The train ride takes around 3 hours, costing around £8 per person one way. You can book your journey directly on the Hungarian Railway Website. We also recommend downloading their app to book and show your ticket.

Debrecen is also only around 1 hour away from the Romanian border, making it an ideal day trip if you’re visiting Northern Romania. We actually travelled from Oradea in Romania and found it very straightforward. We have a full guide available on how to get from Oradea to Debrecen.

Árpád Square Reformed Church

The Reformed Church on Árpád Square was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. With its unique castle-like towers and design, it’s truly unique.

It’s located slightly further from the city centre but it’s definitely worth the 10-minutes detour. While you’re in the area, we recommend grabbing lunch at Govinda Vegetarian Restaurant for a very affordable Indian feast.

Reformed Great Church of Debrecen

Visiting the Reformed Great Church is definitely one of the best things to do in Debrecen. Built in the 19th century, this iconic landmark is not only the symbol of Protestantism in Hungary but also the place where Hungary’s independence was declared.

Today, the church serves as a place of worship and a cultural venue. It hosts exhibits of the city’s religious history as well as some occasional classical concerts. There’s also an option to climb to the top of the tower to enjoy panoramic views of the city.

Pásti Street Orthodox Synagogue

Located just a short walk from the Déri Museum, Pásti Street Orthodox Synagogue offers a glimpse into the rich history of the city’s Jewish community. Prior to World War II, Debrecen was home to over 12,000 Jewish residents. This synagogue served as the spiritual and cultural centre for their community.

Today, Pásti Street Orthodox Synagogue remains an active place of worship and the symbol of resilience of the remaining Jewish community.

Csokonai Theater

The oldest and the largest theatre in Debrecen is definitely one of the best Debrecen attractions. It was constructed in the 19th century and the building itself is very impressive from the outside, featuring elements of Byzantine and Moorish architecture.

You can check events schedule and prices on the Csokonai Theater Official Website.

Déri Museum (Art Museum)

Déri Museum is one of the most important cultural venues and a must-visit if you love history and art. Set in a stunning neo-baroque building and surrounded by a lovely park, the museum contains a mix of art, archeological and ethnographic collections.

Inside, you will find the best pieces of Hungary’s most famous artists, including dramatic biblical paintings. There are also permanent and temporary exhibitions on Hungary’s history, folk culture and everyday life in Hungary throughout the years. It’s also super affordable – entry fee costs around £6 per person.

Saint Anne’s Cathedral

Saint Anne’s Cathedral was built in the 18th century, in Baroque style. Set right in the centre of the city, it serves as the main catholic church in Debrecen and an iconic landmark you shouldn’t miss on your Debrecen itinerary.
