We’ve been to Thailand a fair bit, and have visited all these places more than a few times. From our first time in Thailand, to our fifth, they have never disappointed.

What to Expect and Things to Know
When to Visit
We would recommend coming to Thailand either between November to early December or Late February to March. Why? These times fall into the dry season. November to early December should be cooler and is before the high season. By Late February, the season starts getting quieter again.
Getting Around
Thailand is very travel friendly, and travelling around Thailand even as a first timer is quite easy. There are a lot of options available and it’s easy to find and book them. For longer journeys like Bangkok to Phuket, and Krabi to Chiang Mai flying is a good option. If you have longer and fancy a different experience, you have the option to travel by train. For shorter journeys like Phuket to Krabi, shared mini-vans and boats are your best option.
For flights Air Asia is a popular budget airline in Southeast Asia, but we always recommend checking on Skyscanner for cheap flights. For booking shorter transfers, 12go Asia is our favourite site to do this online. However, in Thailand you won’t find it hard to find travel agencies selling transfers which we often used. We always found them to be fair and honest!

Costs
Thailand is of course a popular destination, seeing over 30 million tourists come each year. This does mean it’s not the cheapest country in Southeast Asia, however you can still do it on a budget. There are plenty of options for food, accommodation and attractions to fit your budget.
The average cost we spent per night for a private room in Thailand was around £25 for a comfortable standard. The average meal for two was less than £10 with drinks.
Most places in Thailand will take card, but there will likely be a 1-3% charge. Your other option is to withdraw cash, most ATMs will charge you £3-6 each time so we recommend taking out quite a bit at once.
Visas
Based on our nationalities (UK and PL) we can currently travel under the visa exemption to Thailand for up to 60 days. You must also complete The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before coming. You should check your own circumstances before travelling, we would recommend using the below sites:
Safety
We always felt safe in Thailand, and locals have always been helpful and friendly. Like travelling anywhere, stay cautious and keep yourself safe. Make sure you have valid travel insurance to cover your stay in Thailand.
If you are thinking of renting a scooter/bike in Thailand, consider your ability to ride and the current legislation. Sadly we saw a few bike accidents while backpacking Thailand. Road safety in Thailand can be an area of concern, so again take some caution.
Best Places To Visit in Thailand for First Timers
Bangkok (2-3 days)
Bangkok is of course one of the best places to visit in Thailand for first timers. Bangkok is a bustling, vibrant, city. It blends culture and charm with modern energy. From temples and floating markets to street food stalls, Thailand’s capital is a place where every corner offers something new to discover. Whether you’re seeking cultural landmarks, hidden neighborhoods, or a taste of the city’s legendary nightlife, Bangkok really has it all.
We’ve always stayed around the Phra Nakhon area of Bangkok, and would recommend this. It’s close to many of the main attractions and is a convenient location with many restaurants.
2-3 days in Bangkok is going to give you enough time to see the sights and take in the city. Here’s the places we recommend visiting!
- The Grand Palace & The Temple of the Emerald Buddha
- Temples, Including Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan
- Lumphini Park
- Khao San Road
- Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market
- Shopping Malls, including MBK Center, Siam Paragon, Iconsiam, centralwOrld

Phuket (2-3 days)
After Bangkok, heading to Phuket is going to be a change of scenery to continue your first Thailand adventure. With its turquoise waters, golden beaches, and lush green hills, Phuket is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and soak it all up during the day time. Beyond its postcard-perfect scenery, Thailand’s largest island offers a mix of beach towns, rich cultural heritage and vibrant night markets. Not to mention Phuket’s famous Bangla Road nightlife!
For your first time in Thailand, we recommend staying in Patong. This area has many of the main spots and is easy to access other parts of Phuket from.
This is what we recommend seeing while in Phuket. Phuket can be very touristy, and it does mean there are some more tourist traps and possibly unethical attractions.
- Phuket Old Town & Night Market
- The Big Buddha
- Bangla Road (We recommend the New York Bar)
- Beaches: Patong Beach, Freedom Beach, Karon Beach

Krabi (2-3 days)
Next up is Krabi. Again, bringing another new vibe from Bangkok and Phuket. Dramatic limestone cliffs, emerald waters, and powdery white beaches make Krabi one of Thailand’s most breathtaking destinations. Known for its laid-back charm and stunning natural beauty, this coastal province offers everything from island-hopping adventures to lively night markets and authentic local culture. Whether you’re chasing adventure or simply want to relax in paradise, Krabi is one of the best places to visit in Thailand for first timers.
We recommend staying in Ao Nang for great access to beaches, day trips, night markets, and restaurants & bars. These are our recommendations of the best places to visit in Thailand for first timers in Krabi.
- Ao Nang Beach (We really enjoyed kayaking here and exploring the limestone cliffs)
- Pai Plong Beach & Monkey Trail
- Railay Beach
- Krabi Night Market
- Wat Tham Suea
- Emerald Pool

Krabi Islands (2-5 days)
From Krabi you have plenty of easy options to explore some of Thailand’s many beautiful islands, which you definitely don’t want to miss. We love the laid-back vibe of Thai Island life! You have the option of staying on some of these islands, or visiting for the day. There are plenty of tour options available allowing you to visit several islands on one tour.
Phi Phi Islands
Made famous from The Beach (film), Phi Phi Islands are truly stunning with dramatic limestone cliffs and beautiful bays. They are one of the most popular, but are of course worth seeing. You can stay here, or just visit for the day. We actually chose a transfer from Phuket to Krabi, which included a stop off in Phi Phi which worked very well.
Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta is a larger Island which we have visited a few times. It’s easy to reach, but offers a much quieter island experience. If you’ve got time, a couple of nights on Koh Lanta is perfect to switch off and explore its many long sandy beaches and beautiful nature.
Koh Hong
Koh Hong is one of Krabi’s most stunning islands. With towering limestone cliffs, soft white sand, and crystal-clear waters. A highlight is the hidden lagoon where you can kayak or swim in calm, emerald-green water surrounded by the dramatic cliffs. Koh Hong is part of a national park, and you can’t stay overnight, but there are day trips from Krabi.
Koh Poda
Koh Poda is a small but breathtaking island just off the Krabi coast. Known for its powdery white beaches and turquoise waters, it’s perfect for swimming and snorkelling. A limestone rock rising from the sea makes it especially photogenic!
Koh Jum (Ko Pu)
Koh Jum, also known as Ko Pu, is a tranquil island near Krabi that offers a peaceful escape from the more crowded tourist spots. With long sandy beaches and a laid-back local vibe, it’s perfect for relaxing. You can also stay overnight on Koh Jum, in one of the small resorts, bungalows, and guesthouses to give a unique Island experience.

Chiang Mai (2-3 days)
Lastly, Chiang Mai is a must. It’s easily one of our favourite cities in the world. Nestled among mountains and lush countryside, Chiang Mai is the cultural heart of northern Thailand. Known for its ancient temples, amazing night markets, and beautiful nature, the city offers a slower pace that feels worlds away from Bangkok.
We’ve stayed in a few places in Chiang Mai and have always been happy with our choice. For your first time, The Old City is a good option. Here’s everything you want to do during your first time in Chiang Mai.
- The Old City
- Temples
- Night Markets
- Royal Park Rajapruek
- Doi Inthanon National Park
- Elephant Sanctuary – Please ensure you only visit an ethical one. Make sure you do plenty of research and visit a sanctuary that truly cares about the wellbeing of the animals.
