Sigiriya Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress located in Sri Lanka. Built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, it is famous for its beautiful paintings, carefully designed gardens, and the remains of a giant lion that once marked the entrance to the summit. Today, climbing Sigiriya Lion Rock is as much about soaking in the history as it is about enjoying the incredible views. Sigiriya Lion Rock is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the country’s most well-known historical landmarks.
Wilpattu National Park is Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest national park. It's known for its forests, open grasslands, and many natural lakes. It’s located in the northwest, around a four-hour drive from Colombo, and is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to spot wildlife. Some of the highlights being leopards, sloth bears, elephants, and a wide variety of birdlife. Wilapattu is a quieter, less crowded national park than some of Sri Lanka’s other options and we felt it was an ethical and sustainable option.
Travelling from Kandy to Ella by car is a great option, allowing you more comfort, flexibility and freedom to explore attractions along the way compared to taking the train. You can stop where you want, visit stunning viewpoints and explore at your own pace. The drive is very scenic and you’ll pass waterfalls, rolling tea plantations and charming towns such as Nuwara Eliya.
We recently flew with Shenzhen Airlines to Bangkok, Thailand via a 7 hour layover in Shenzhen over the Christmas period. The flights were a fraction of the cost of other airlines, and despite the longer journey and never having heard of the airline before, a quick Google search had us booking our flights.
