Our Experience Climbing Sigiriya Lion Rock
We started our day fairly early, waking up at 7:00am and grabbing a decent breakfast before arriving at Sigiriya Lion Rock ready to start the climb by 8:00am. Luckily, our hotel was only a 10 minute walk away, though it’s easy to find a tuk tuk to take you if needed. We headed to the ticket office, and bought the tickets for $35 per person.
Starting by 8:00am worked very well, it wasn’t too early but we still beat the crowds. On our way up it was fairly quiet and once we reached the top there were probably around 30 people. By the time we were coming down, tour groups and plenty more people had arrived and it was getting busy!
We took the climb up fairly easy, stopping off a few times at various spots on the way. There are several interesting spots you can easily rest at offering views and things to see. Overall the climb was not too difficult, and there are steps up for the large part of it. We were actually very surprised when we did reach the top just how quick and easy it was compared to some of the information we had seen.
The view and experience at the top was 100% worth both the effort and money. It felt even more special that we had achieved the climb, and been rewarded with this stunning special place. The views were absolutely breathtaking and we enjoyed about 30 minutes exploring and just sitting and taking it in.
On the way down, we also took the iconic spiral staircases which led to some stunning cave paintings which you don’t want to miss. We slowly headed down and explored the gardens and museums which are also included in the entrance.

How Long Does It Take to Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock?
So you are probably wanting to know how long it took us. So, how long does it take to climb Sigiriya Lion Rock? The climb up only took us 20 minutes, including a few short stops for a quick rest and drink of water. We would plan between 15 – 40 minutes up depending on your fitness, but you have to try it! We spent around 30 minutes at the top, and probably spent 30 minutes coming back down including seeing the cave paintings.
The climb itself does require some concentration and care to be taken, and you will want suitable footwear such as hiking boots or trainers. We were absolutely fine with just simple trainers. However, it wasn’t too challenging and you can always stop off on the way. Most of the way to the top, there are steps, which are quite steep and could be scary if you have a fear of heights as they follow the edge of the rock around. Though we really think the climb was not bad at all! Once you reach the top, it will truly be worth it.

Things You Should Know When Climbing Sigiriya Lion Rock
Make sure you start early to beat the crowds, as it can get very busy. On your way down, don’t miss the cave paintings, accessed via the famous spiral staircases. Also, don’t miss the other attractions such as the gardens and museum.
Ticket price per adult for us was $35, some locals and specific countries did have a reduced rate. It seemed quite steep at first, though it was definitely worth it, and that’s coming from two budget travellers!
There are some small shops and cafes inside before you start the climb if you do need to buy anything, and some souvenir stalls towards the exit. We bought water with us and recommend bringing plenty with you.

There are monkeys and dogs along the way, though apart from one monkey helping themselves to someone’s crisps, they are nothing to worry about if you take some caution. Also, wear suitable clothing and footwear, this is a hike up a large steep rock!
Lastly, there is a great Sunset and View Point called Mapagala Fortress, located on the map below where you get a fantastic view of Sigiriya Lion Rock. It only takes 10 minutes to reach the top. It can get busy though at sunset, we went around midday and had the viewpoint all to ourselves.
