Introduction: How to Get from Copenhagen to Gothenburg

If you are looking at an affordable, convenient option of how to get from Copenhagen to Gothenburg (or back) then we have you covered. We recently visited both Gothenburg and Copenhagen for a long weekend break, and travelling between the two was surprisingly easy. We would really recommend combining Denmark and Sweden for a city break.

Transport Options: How to Get from Copenhagen to Gothenburg

We decided to travel by bus, and we will explain everything about our journey in the next section. However, there are a few different options which you can consider depending on your budget and preference. 

Bus

There are several options by bus, with the main provider being FlixBus. The journey will take around 4.5 hours, and is usually the most affordable – costing around €30 per person each way. There are also plenty of times daily to choose from. We would recommend booking online in advance.

Train

The train is another great option, with plenty of options available daily. The journey is around 3.5 hours and the trains are comfortable and modern. Prices can vary, though it’s possible from around €50 per person each way. You can book via Omio, or directly on the rail operators websites. 

Car

If you already have a car, then you can drive between the two in around 3.5 hours. Personally, we don’t think a car is necessary for visiting Copenhagen or Gothenburg.

If you are considering a taxi / driver then this will set you back around €750 from what we could find! 

Fly

There are also plenty of flights between Copenhagen and Gothenburg. Flight prices vary massively, but expect to pay between €60 – 150 per person, one way. The flight time is under one hour, however you do need to consider the time to get to, and navigate the airports. 

Based on this, we would highly recommend either the bus or train!

Our Journey: How to Get from Copenhagen to Gothenburg

We took FlixBus, having booked it in advance online. We paid around €20 per person for the journey from Copenhagen to Gothenburg. We would honestly recommend it for an affordable and easy way to travel between the two. 

The bus departed from Københavns Busterminal (Carsten Niebuhrs Gade) / Copenhagen Bus Terminal which we have included on the below map. It was easy to find, and there were toilets, a waiting area, and a small shop. It’s also very close to Ikea, which was a great place to grab an affordable lunch before getting on the bus. Ikea also has free (small) luggage storage for shoppers, which is very useful! 

The journey was straightforward and took less than 4.5 hours. The bus did stop at the border crossing for around 10 minutes while border control completed a quick check. We don’t think every bus is stopped. There was also a toilet available on the bus if needed. 

We arrived at Gothenburg Nils Ericson Terminal / Gothenburg Bus Terminal, again we have included a map below. This was a very good bus station with luggage storage, toilets, shops, and several restaurants.
