Introduction: Moel Famau Hike
On a recent break in the UK, we visited the stunning Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape. While there one of the main things we did was the Moel Famau Hike. We have explored parts of Wales a few times now, including around The Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia National Park. It’s one of our favourite places in the UK, the nature is truly special and it always provides a quiet, peaceful escape.
In this guide we will share everything you need to know about the Moel Famau Hike, from where to park, to the difficulty & time of the hike. It’s an amazing hike, and you won’t want to miss it! You will explore breathtaking nature, walk through woodlands, and have stunning views as you hike up, and then reach the unique Jubilee Tower at the summit.
There are several hikes around Moel Famau, so this guide will explore what we did, and we can definitely recommend it.

Location and Parking
One of the reasons we chose the Moel Famau Hike was because we had family with us, and we were looking for something which would be easy to get to and easy to park. Good news, Moel Famau Hike ticks both of these boxes.
We stayed just out of Chester, which with Wrexham are the main cities near Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape. Around this area there are many holiday parks which we really recommend for a peaceful and affordable option surrounded by nature. We usually book a mobile home which is between £50 – 100 a night, though there are options to camp too. Thornley Leisure Parks is a great option if you are interested.
From Chester, Moel Famau is only a 30 minute drive following the A Roads, so is a perfect day out. We headed to Coed Moel Famau NRW car park (Post Code: CH7 5SH) which we have included on the map below.
The car park has plenty of space, and even on a Bank Holiday we easily found a spot. It’s located right at the start of the hike, and there are plenty of picnic benches and toilets available.
Parking costs £2.50 for the first 3 hours, then 50p per each additional 30 minutes, with a maximum charge of £6 per day. Very good value, we think! You can pay by card, which is always helpful.

Difficulty and Time
From the car park, there are many sign posts and a map showing your location and the available walks. We followed the purple signs for the Moel Famau Hike.
There are several options on this hike, with a steeper quicker route, or an easier, slower route. We took the less steep route up, which offered better views over the surrounding landscape, and then mainly took the steeper route back down. This worked very well, and we would recommend it for all ages if you enjoy walking and are reasonably active.
The Moel Famau Hike is a moderately challenging hike, and is 554 metres to the top. Consider your own health and fitness, though we feel there is nothing too challenging and there are plenty of spots to stop if you need a rest, or just to admire the view.
In total we walked around 3.5 miles, and the whole hike took us 2 hours. Common times are between 1.5 – 3 hours. There were options to walk further if you wanted to explore more of the area, though as it was a bit wet and windy on the day this was perfect for us.

Moel Famau Hike Tips
When we visited, there was no shop or cafe at the car park, so we would recommend making sure you have plenty of water and some snacks. It’s a great spot for a picnic, with plenty of spaces and picnic benches if you want to make it a full day out of it.
Of course, make sure you have comfortable clothes to hike in, including good footwear. When we went it did get very windy, and it did rain at the top. So, be prepared and check the weather forecast.
We took waterproof coats, hats and gloves. On the other hand, depending on when you visit, you might want sunglasses, a sun hat, and sunscreen.

Final Thoughts: Moel Famau Hike
We had an amazing time completing the Moel Famau Hike, and we would happily do it again. We definitely recommend it for a moderate, family friendly hike. Offering stunning views across the Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape, and the spectacular Jubilee Tower at the top. Afterwards, we actually booked to go back to Wales this year, to explore some more of Snowdonia National Park. We hope this guide has been helpful, and that you enjoy hiking Moel Famau as much as we did.
